South Korea has signed a $43 billion deal to build the world’s largest offshore wind farm. In this way, the government aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Work has officially started with the installation of the first high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable of the facility, which will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm. Established on England’s Yorkshire coast, the facility will also be the country’s first wind farm with a high voltage direct current connection.

The wind farm, a joint effort of British, Italian and Norwegian energy companies, will be developed in three phases. These phases will consist of phases A, B and C. The facility, which is expected to produce 1.2 gigawatts of energy at each stage, will reach its full capacity of 3.6 gigawatts in the final stage.

GE Renewable Energy will supply 87 enormous Haliade-X 14 MW wind turbines for this facility. According to the statement, a turbine can produce up to 74 GWh of annual gross energy. In this way, 52 thousand metric tons of carbon dioxide can be saved.
