The world’s first carbon dioxide battery! – ShiftDelete.Net

The Italian entrepreneur Energy Dome, the manufacturer of the world’s first carbon dioxide battery, has begun to enter new markets. The technology, which will also begin to be used in the USA, uses carbon dioxide to store wind and solar energy on the grid.

How does the carbon dioxide battery work?

Energy Dome announced earlier this month that it has received funding and network support from Hawaii and Bay Area-based Elemental Excelerator, which invests in climate technology. Elemental says that storing energy from intermittent sources such as the sun and wind for long periods is a missing piece of green energy. The company says this is now possible thanks to its new carbon dioxide battery.

Energy Dome, which started its activities in 2020, succeeded in moving from prototype studies to high-capacity testing in a period of two years. The company, which put the first carbon dioxide battery into operation in Sardinia, was able to sign energy agreements with other companies in a short time.

So how does this system work? CO2 stands out as one of the few gases that can be condensed and stored as a liquid under pressure at ambient temperature. Carbon dioxide thus allows high-density energy storage without the need for extremely low temperatures. This situation creates significant advantages in terms of cost.

To charge the battery, it takes CO2 at a temperature and pressure close to the atmosphere and is compressed. The heat generated during compression is stored. CO2 gas, which loses its thermal energy, becomes liquid. While generating or distributing electricity, liquid CO2 is heated and converted into a gas that powers a power-generating turbine. Thanks to the completely sealed system in this process, CO2 gas is always preserved for reuse.

This system, which can be implemented with very low budgets in terms of cost, can also be used everywhere, regardless of area and region. So what do you think about the carbon dioxide battery developed by the Italian company? You can share your views with us in the comments section.
