Washington A US Congress report provides new insights into ex-President Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election result. Trump’s ongoing demands on the Justice Department leadership to declare the presidential election “corrupted” almost led to a revolt among agency staff, according to a report circulated by the Senate’s democratically led Justice Committee on Thursday. Warnings from high officials about mass layoffs in the ministry prevented the threatened uprising.

By attempting to use the Justice Department for personal and political purposes to stay in the White House, Trump had massively abused the power of the presidential office, the report said.

It is true that what happened after the US election on November 3rd is largely known. But the investigation, based on sifting through documents and questioning ex-officials, reveals the full extent of Trump’s efforts to cling to power. It also discusses how much the then president benefited from the help of Jeffrey Clark, a little-known lawyer in the Justice Department who actively worked to question the election result. In the end, however, high-ranking employees of the Trump ministry stood up to them, it said.

Republicans released their own report downplaying concerns raised by Democrats. In it, Trump is portrayed as a hero who ignored Clark’s suggestions and refused to fire senior Justice Department officials.
