Ankara Not long ago, Joe Biden and Recep Tayyip Erdogan made no secret of their mutual dislike. In 2020, US President Biden openly stated that he now wanted to actively support the Turkish opposition. The Turkish head of state then blamed his US counterpart for supporting Kurdish rebels in Syria who were fighting Turkish soldiers there. Biden recently no longer wanted to meet Erdogan bilaterally, and Erdogan was not invited to his democracy summit in January.
But the war in Ukraine is now carefully bringing both sides back together. At the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels this week, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was a popular discussion partner. US Secretary of State Blinken invited him to Washington on May 18th. And when it comes to the sensitive issue of arms deals, an agreement is suddenly announced.
