Berlin The transport sector emitted 145 million tons of CO2 in the past year and thus complied with the budget specified in the KSG Climate Protection Act. This emerges from calculations by the mineral oil industry, to which “Welt am Sonntag” refers.
The new Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) escaped the legal obligation to have to implement immediate measures against car traffic at short notice. According to the calculations of the fuel association en2x, gasoline consumption only increased by 0.6 percent in 2021, the paper writes. However, diesel sales, which make up two thirds of the fuel balance, have fallen by one percent.
“It is true that sales of aviation fuel will increase by a good 20 percent this year. With the small proportion of domestic flights, however, this hardly has any effect, ”the newspaper quotes from the explanations. The bottom line is that the CO2 budget of 145 million tons prescribed for the past year will not be exceeded.
In 2022, the CO2 budget of the transport sector will decrease further to 140 million tons. Observers, on the other hand, had expected that the transport sector would exceed the target value with the rise of travel in 2021 and that the legally prescribed emergency program would be necessary for the first time.

The Climate Protection Act prescribes maximum annual emissions for every economic sector. If the value is exceeded, the responsible ministers must set up an emergency program that will lead the sector back on the target path of the Paris climate agreement within a year.
