Berlin In view of the deficit in the billions in statutory health insurance (SHI), the party leaders of the SPD and the Greens are calling for higher-income earners to be burdened more heavily. According to this, GKV members who earn more than around 5000 euros gross per month should pay significantly more.

“In the health care system, the increased costs for energy and personnel have a significant impact, and increasing life expectancy is also causing health care costs to continue to rise,” SPD chairwoman Saskia Esken told the Handelsblatt.

“So if additional income is needed in the health care system to cope with this increase in costs, then I think a moderate increase in the contribution assessment ceiling can be a sensible way.” The Green Party leader Ricarda Lang made a similar statement. “Breakdown premium increases are not the long-term solution,” she argued.
