The SİPER Air Defense System has come to an end!

Turkey has been embargoed many times in the past 50 years by the United States and its other European allies. Moreover, not only aircraft and ships, but also the systems and ammunition necessary to defend ourselves were used as a trump card.

Thanks to the Presidency of Defense Industries, which was established in 1985, we can now produce a large part of our needs with domestic means. As a matter of fact, this includes SIPER, which will be one of the biggest rivals of the Air Defense System Patriot, which the USA does not insist on selling to us.

SİPER Air Defense System has successfully passed another test!

A successful image of a test conducted for the SİPER Air Defense System has been published recently. In the statement, it was said that the critical stage was left behind. The system, which will be put into mass production in a short time, is expected to enter the inventory by 2023. In this way, our layered Air Defense System will finally be completed. Well what does it mean?

HİSAR A

A country or a military unit outside the border needs more than one Air Defense System to be protected against all kinds of attacks. For example, the S-400 system we now buy from Russia or the Patriot used by the USA are designed to shoot down ballistic missiles or jets moving at high altitudes. For this reason, they may not be able to neutralize a low-flying UAV.

We examined the features, usage areas and differences of armed unmanned sea vehicles named ULAQ and SALVO.

If you wish, let’s look at the characteristics of 6 different domestic systems that Turkey has in order to explain the situation. KORKUT is in the first place. This HSS (Air Defense System) is mounted on an armored tracked vehicle. It is equipped with a 35 mm KDC-02 type double-barreled weapon system. It can provide effective protection against all aircraft within 4 km by making 1100 beats per minute.

SUNGUR comes right after. This HSS was built on an armored vehicle, again keeping mobility ahead. It can hit all targets within 8 kilometers with the missiles inside. Afterwards, we switch to slightly more high-tech systems.

The HİSAR family begins here. In the first step, HİSAR A+ has a minimum range of 2 km and a maximum range of 15 km. HİSAR O+, on the other hand, has a minimum range of 3 km and a maximum range of 25 km. The range of the recently developed HİSAR RF (Radar seeker head) is up to 35 kilometers.

In the last layer, there is the Air Defense System, which was initially developed under the name HİSAR U, but later known as SİPER. In the version of SİPER, which appears as Blok1, the minimum range is 30 km, and the maximum range is exactly 100 km. Of course, the range of Blok2 and Blok3 to be taken into inventory in the second and third stages will exceed 150 kilometers.

Its biggest rival will be the Patriot, whose PAC-1 and PAC-3 versions have a range of 20 to 70 kilometers, and the PAC-2 with a range of 160 kilometers. However, the coverage range of the radar used in this HSS is only 150 km. There are 2 different radars that are planned to be used in SİPER.

It is said that the first of these is 600 km Long Range and Land Based Air Defense Radar. The other is the ÇAFRAD radar, which will have a range of 450+ km and the ability to track 1000+ targets at the same time, which will be located on the TF-2000 destroyer ship, where the project model creation and feasibility studies continue.

Therefore, when the system enters the inventory in 2023, it will sit in a position between the Patriot and the S-400. Turkey’s layered Air Defense System will be fully protected. Of course, let us remind you that technology keeps up with the times. Because now there is talk of missiles that can go out of the atmosphere and hit their target.

HİSAR-O+ features

  • System avoidance range: 25km
  • Number of missiles ready to fire: ≥18
  • Ready-to-fire battalion level: ≥54
  • Fighter aircraft detection and tracking range: 40-60 km
  • Number of detectable targets: >60
  • Target types: Warplanes, helicopters, UAVs and SİHAs, cruise missiles, air-to-surface missiles
  • Other features: Air defense execution with distributed and flexible architecture, 360-degree effectiveness, simultaneous engagement and firing of at least 9 targets
  • Systems that can work integrated: Fire control center, medium altitude air defense radar, electro-optical system, LINK-16 connection with Erimay-L16
