Berlin The mood in the Berlin SPD is bad. A leading Social Democrat even described it as “chaotic” on election night. The party is the clear loser in the election, losing more than three percentage points compared to 2021. The Social Democrats were only able to win four direct mandates – throughout Berlin, there used to be so many in each district. In parts of the party, the culprit has obviously been identified: Franziska Giffey.

The head of state and governing mayor, as was already clear on the evening of the election, will have to answer for the result within the party. Regardless of whether the party is 105 votes ahead of the Greens.

The district chairwoman of the SPD center, Julia Plehnert, told the Tagesspiegel: “If you crash like this, it’s not about whether you end up a tenth in front of or behind the Greens.” Plehnert, who belongs to the left wing of the party, said: “Then you have to draw conclusions.”
