The younger prime ministers of the CDU cultivate a different style of politics – and are changing the party as a result.

Berlin There is a lot at stake in Wiesbaden in autumn – for Prime Minister Boris Rhein, but also for the federal CDU. Rhein took over the state chancellery from Volker Bouffier (71) just over six months ago. Should he win the state election in 2023, the balance of power in the party will change permanently.

The 50-year-old Rhein belongs to the “young connection” in the CDU, as a squad of younger CDU prime ministers call themselves. In 2024 she wants to confidently decide with party leader Friedrich Merz who will be the candidate for chancellor in 2025. There shouldn’t be any chaos like the sister dispute between the CDU and CSU in 2021. Your own strength shouldn’t even allow you to do that.
