Nuremberg According to the Federal Employment Agency (BA), the labor market in Germany continued to develop well towards the end of the year with only a slight increase in the number of unemployed. “The recovery of the last few months has continued,” said BA boss Detlef Scheele on Tuesday in Nuremberg when the December figures were presented. However, the corona pandemic is casting a shadow.

“The advertisements for short-time work rose sharply in December,” said Scheele. According to this, short-time working was announced for 286,000 people by December 27, mainly in the hospitality and retail sectors.

The number of unemployed rose from November to December unadjusted by 12,000 to 2.33 million. That was 378,000 fewer than a year ago. The unemployment rate was 5.1 percent. Seasonally adjusted, however, the number of unemployed fell by 23,000 in a month-on-month comparison.
