Berlin Thanks to the economic upturn, the situation on the German labor market improved further in October. The number of unemployed fell to 2.377 million, as the Federal Employment Agency (BA) announced on Thursday in Nuremberg.

That was 88,000 fewer than in September and 383,000 fewer than a year ago. The unemployment rate fell by 0.2 points to 5.2 percent. Unemployment and underemployment fell sharply, while employment and demand from companies for new staff increased: “The consequences of the corona crisis on the labor market are still visible, but are getting smaller,” said BA boss Detlef Scheele. At the same time, the number of short-time workers continues to decline.

If the seasonal fluctuations are factored out, the number of unemployed fell in September by a seasonally adjusted 39,000 on the previous month. Experts surveyed by Reuters had expected a decline of 20,000. In addition, the number of employees on short-time work fell to 760,000 in August. For comparison: the record value in the wake of the corona pandemic was just under six million in April 2020.
