The day after, nervous tension prevailed in Sweden: On Sunday, the ruling Social Democrats decided to join NATO – now the question arises: How will Russia react?
A first, gloomy statement came on Monday from Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov. The decision by Sweden and Finland to give up their military alliance was a “serious mistake with far-reaching consequences”. Addressing the two Scandinavian countries, he added menacingly: “You should have no illusions that we will just put up with it.”
Moscow knows that geopolitical forces will shift to Russia’s disadvantage as the two countries join the North Atlantic Defense Alliance, but the decision seems immovable.
On Monday, the parliaments of both countries will formally debate the application, with a large majority assured. On Tuesday, Sweden and Finland want to send the necessary documents to the NATO headquarters in Brussels.
