The information of the US army fell into the hands of Mali!

A typo reportedly forwarded millions of US military emails to Mali, some of which contained highly sensitive information. The shocking issue was caused by entering .ML instead of .MIL for the recipient email address domain. Because of such a simple mistake, the Malian government, which now has close ties to Russia, could have sensitive information from the US military in their hands!

The intelligence information of the US army may fall into other hands!

The one-letter error reportedly exposed data such as “diplomatic documents, tax returns, passwords and travel information of senior officials” and much more. While the misdirected emails have (so far) reached an official who manages Mali’s country domain address, control of .ML will soon return to the Mali government, which has close ties to Russia.

The “typo leak” was disclosed by Johannes Zuurbier, a Dutch contractor who manages Mali’s country domain address. Zuurbier says there have been multiple attempts to warn the United States about the issue, urging it to take it seriously, starting in 2014. But he adds that none of these attempts have been successful.

All emails will be handed over to the Mali government once the officer’s term ends. For this reason, the official, whose contract was nearing the end, tried to warn the US government for the last time. “This risk is real and can be exploited by enemies of the United States,” Zuurbier wrote in a letter to the United States. He revealed that there were about 117,000 emails, and about 1,000 more received on Wednesday alone.

The e-mails sent contain very sensitive information. So much so that it includes travel plans for the US Army Chief of Staff, General James McConville’s trip to Indonesia in May. Additionally, it includes maps of facilities, photographs of bases, identification documents (including passport numbers), ships’ crew lists, tax and financial records, medical data, ships’ crew lists, naval inspection reports, contracts, and complaints against personnel.

Speaking on behalf of the Pentagon, Lieutenant Colonel Tim Gorman said the Department of Defense is “aware of this problem and takes seriously any unauthorized disclosures of controlled national security information or controlled unclassified information.” Stating that necessary precautions will be taken, Lieutenant Colonel added that all US military personnel should be comfortable.
