71-year-old al-Zawahiri was one of the most wanted men in the world. Along with Osama bin Laden, he was instrumental in the planning and execution of the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC. After the killing of bin Laden, whose deputy he had been, al-Zawahiri assumed leadership of al-Qaeda.
The Egyptian doctor was imprisoned in the 1980s for his commitment to militant Islam. After his release, he left Egypt and became involved in violent international jihadist movements.
