Scientists continue to work to achieve faster processing by developing alternative technologies to semiconductors. Researchers working at Ruhr University Bochum for the water-based processor announced that they have developed a special circuit and performed TeraHertz (THz) level switching.
The first step for the processor with the water-based circuit! THz speed level reached
Transistors, one of the basic components of electronic systems, are used to process data through their semiconductors. Transistors, which act as switching between 0 and 1 values in circuits, come together to form processors.
Semiconductor materials, usually silicon-based, are among the most important factors determining the processing speed of modern processors. In their experiment with water containing dissolved iodide, the researchers succeeded in switching faster than the semiconductors used today.
The process, carried out by sending a laser pulse, allows electrons to be ejected from the dissolved salt. In this based system, the process that increases the conductivity is converted into 0 or 1 switching with a second laser.
Because the laser pulse is so fast, the water can change state in picoseconds, a trillionth of a second. Stating that this way, the potential computer speed in the THz range can be achieved, the researchers underlined that they continue to work to scale this technology.
