Companies oriented towards the common good

Berlin Solar-powered electric modules for African villages, help for the unbureaucratic employment of refugees, climate-neutral mobile communications: the list of companies that focus on projects aimed at the common good is getting longer and longer in Germany. These companies do not have maximum personal profit as a business model, but rather social or ecological benefits for society. They often also produce social innovations.

But from the federal government’s perspective, they are cut off from a large part of government support – whether funding programs, research or public procurement. In order to change that, the cabinet has decided on a strategy to strengthen companies oriented towards the common good. Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger (FDP) and Economics State Secretary Sven Giegold (Greens) presented the paper on Wednesday.

Handelsblatt takes a closer look at this new form of entrepreneurship, which, according to some experts, will play an increasingly important role for the German economy in the future.
