The federal and state governments will discuss the corona situation on Tuesday – RKI reports 16,086 new infections

Omikron has developed into the predominant Corona variant in Ireland. According to current analyzes, it is assumed that half (51.6 percent) of all confirmed infections are Omicron cases, the Irish Ministry of Health announced on Sunday.

Ireland’s chief medical advisor, Tony Holohan, told Irish broadcaster RTÉ: “It has Took less than two weeksuntil Omikron has become the dominant Covid variant in Ireland, which shows how contagious the variant is. “It is now imperative to limit contacts and to flatten the curve of new infections in order to prevent unnecessary deaths and to improve the health system protection.

Both the curve of new infections and that of deaths has been in the country with around five million inhabitants in the past few days and weeks rose steeply. The incidence, which in Ireland is only reported for a 14-day range, was most recently (as of December 13) 1305 cases per 100,000 population.

In early December, the Irish government introduced new corona restrictions. Clubs first had to close again and theaters or cinemas were only allowed to occupy half of their capacities. There are again upper limits for private meetings: a maximum of members of four households can meet.
