The motto “Change through trade” has reached its limits. A new, autocratic antithesis to a rule-based international system is positioned.

Dusseldorf February 24th is a rude awakening. With the start of the war in Ukraine, a lie was revealed to a whole generation of decision-makers in politics and business: the intensive trade, exchange and building of economic bridges to Russia did not lead to political change – neither domestically in favor of democratic, constitutional conditions, nor in the intergovernmental relations.
“Zeitenwende” radically describes the fact that old certainties dissolve and give way to an uncomfortable truth. As of this year, one of these old certainties is the doctrine that has been valid up to that point: “Change through trade”.
