The country is without gas in winter

Berlin As far as energy supply is concerned, Poland was considered a role model. Earlier in the year, Russia turned off the country’s gas supply, and the government in Warsaw immediately took countermeasures. And finally there was still a saving pipeline to Scandinavia to be completed.

But now there is chaos. Broken contracts, trouble with Norway, technical delays, helplessness – next winter could be bitterly cold, and the country has no plan B to supply its people and companies with gas.

Review: Immediately after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the most populous Eastern European EU member found itself under pressure to act. The Russian state-owned company Gazprom was the first EU country to cut off the country’s gas supply by no longer filling the Yamal-Europe pipeline that runs via Poland to Germany.

The reason for the punitive action: Warsaw had refused to pay the Russian export monopoly for gas in rubles. But the government was relaxed, referring to forward-looking infrastructure projects.
