The comeback of Commerzbank

In 2022, Commerzbank made its highest profit in 15 years. As the second-largest private bank in Germany announced on Thursday, consolidated profit rose to 1.4 billion euros in the previous year. Shareholders also benefit from the positive development.
The bank, which has been in trouble for a long time, announced a distribution of 20 cents per share on Wednesday – the first since 2018. In addition, the second largest German private bank wants to buy back its own paper for 122 million euros.

“The special thing about Commerzbank is that dividends and payouts have not been the order of the day in recent years,” explains Handelsblatt editor Andreas Kröner in the current episode of Handelsblatt Today. Since the ECB will continue to raise interest rates, Commerzbank can expect further increases in profits this year, according to Kröner. This gives the institute a good chance of returning to the Dax.
