Berlin Even the most ambitious savings program for greenhouse gas emissions could not be enough. “In order to limit the warming of the earth’s climate to two or even 1.5 degrees Celsius, we also have to extract around five to 15 percent of our current annual carbon dioxide emissions from the air and deposit them in the long term,” explains Andreas Oschlies. At the Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research (Geomar) in Kiel, the natural scientist is investigating the possibilities of influencing the climate, known as “climate engineering”.

The world population is currently growing by around 78 million people every year. They need additional energy and products. In addition, carbon dioxide emissions can only be partially reduced in the production of cement, in agriculture, in air and heavy goods traffic and in waste incineration.
