Berlin. In the holiday home of the former Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, the CDU leadership wants to break with its old principles: Surrounded by palm trees and the scent of azaleas, party leader Friedrich Merz and his deputy Carsten Linnemann will meet together with the heads of the ten specialist commissions for the new basic program on Ascension Day retire to Villa Collina in Cadenabbia, Italy.

Far away from the hustle and bustle in Germany, they want to get the party fit for the federal elections in 2025 – and the quick return to the chancellor’s office. The round takes three days and during the breaks will stroll through the three-hectare park, look down at Lake Como and even play boccia – just like Adenauer once did.
