Dusseldorf Living in the country, working in the city – for millions of people, this is reality every day. In the meantime, it was attractive for young families in particular to stay in the city after their studies – short distances to daycare, shopping and doctors and not having a second car were tempting arguments. But high rents in the inner cities and the trend towards working from home have brought the little house in the country back into focus.
Almost a third of employees drive more than half an hour to work. This applies in particular to the expensive metropolises, in which, however, there are also many well-paid jobs.
Most commuters use the car – despite high petrol prices. Only then do buses and trains come at a great distance. Many people are frightened by the notorious unpunctuality and poor public transport service.
