Dusseldorf Volkswagen is unlikely to catch up with its competitor Tesla when it comes to electric cars this year either. The US group is likely to sell around 1.35 million vehicles in 2022, the Center of Automotive Management (CAM) estimates in a new study available to the Handelsblatt. Volkswagen should therefore come out with around 670,000 new electric cars. Tesla also keeps its German competitors at a distance when it comes to innovative strength.

As in the previous year, the Wolfsburg-based car company would only achieve half of Tesla’s sales figures, according to the CAM. The car industry had actually expected that VW would be able to close the sales gap with Tesla more quickly. But the group is suffering more than its US competitor from the ongoing shortage of chips. In addition, important supplier parts are missing due to the Ukraine war, which has led to additional production stops.
