Tens of Millions Lost in Ransom-Ordered Cryptocurrency Attacks

Ransomware attacks through cryptocurrencies have resulted in tens of millions of dollars in losses since 2020.

Immunefi has compiled a list of the 10 biggest attacks by examining ransomware attacks where victims pay in cryptocurrencies.

The list, which includes CNA Financial, JBS, CWT, Brenntag, Colonial Pipeline, Travelex, UCSF, BRB Bank, Jackson County, and Maastricht University, paid the attackers a total of $69.3 million in victims.

Of this total money, 57.7% ($40 million) was paid by CNA Financial, an insurance company.

While this was the largest amount paid on the list, Maastricht University paid the lowest ransom at $218k.

The ransoms paid in these attacks were all paid in bitcoin, and the attacks originated in Russia, Eastern Europe, and Iran.

There are only two companies on this list that have managed to get their money back after paying the ransom. Coloniel Pipeline reclaimed $2.3 million of the $4.4 million ransom it paid; Maastricht University was able to get back all the money it had paid.
