Frankfurt It often causes disputes between landlords and tenants: the annual utility bill. But the next settlement threatens to have particularly serious consequences – because it is likely to surprise many tenants.

Because energy prices have skyrocketed in recent months, experts expect high additional payments. After all, it is unrealistic for the advance payments calculated on the basis of consumption in recent years to cover the costs that are now accruing.

The head of Vonovia, Europe’s largest housing group, Rolf Buch, warns that the next settlements will be accompanied by a “giant tidal wave of problems”. He and consumer advocates agree: they are demanding state support because they fear that many households will not be able to pay the rising costs.
