Bonn Deutsche Telekom has closed its software development site in St. Petersburg because of the Ukraine war. All activities in Russia had been discontinued, the Bonn-based Dax group announced on Twitter on Thursday.

At the balance sheet press conference on February 24, Deutsche Telekom announced that it would employ around 2,000 people, mainly in St. Petersburg, who, among other things, work for the IT subsidiary T-Systems and are responsible for planning and documenting the fiber optic expansion. “In the past few weeks, we have offered these employees the opportunity to work outside of Russia,” it said. Many would have used this opportunity and left the country.

The Deutsche Telekom works council had previously called for the withdrawal from Russia to be initiated.

Deutsche Telekom emphasized that it neither operates networks in Russia nor maintains business relationships with companies in Russia. The workers in St. Petersburg have performed services for customers outside of Russia, it said. These tasks have been taken over by other locations.
