Dusseldorf Anyone who has not hired a tax consultant and has not applied for an extension of the deadline must hurry: October 31 is the deadline for millions of employees to submit their income tax returns. It’s annoying, but it can be quite rewarding. The majority of taxpayers get a good 1000 euros back – only one in ten has to pay a similar amount to the tax office. However, the person to whom the tax authorities owe money sometimes has to wait a long time for the transfer.
The tax office takes its time with the repayment of overpaid taxes: the taxpayers in Brandenburg have to wait the longest, it is actually the fastest in Berlin.
The tax law, which is difficult for many employees to understand, has given tax consultants many secure – and well-paid – jobs: their number has more than tripled since the mid-1960s.
