Dusseldorf, Berlin The number is historic: In March, consumers paid an average of 47 percent more for a tank of fuel than a year earlier. Fuel prices have never risen so sharply in a year. The recent recovery at the petrol pumps seems to have stopped: Both diesel and super are again significantly more expensive compared to the previous week, according to an analysis by the ADAC.

One might think that the fuel discount announced by the federal government is just right. From June 1, Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) wants to lower taxes on fuel, which would reduce the price of petrol by 30 cents and the price of diesel by 14 cents.

But analyzes by scientists show that Lindner’s tank discount should be neither necessary nor sensible. On the contrary: the measure could make the situation even worse – and Russian President Vladimir Putin could benefit from it.
