Frankfurt Germany’s owners tremble before an increase in property tax. “So far, around three million objections have been received, also because associations and some tax consultants all recommend objecting,” reports Florian Köbler, head of the German Tax Union.

A report in the magazine “Der Spiegel” agrees with the anxious. The Office for Finance in Bielefeld has calculated that it could be 33 percent more expensive for homeowners in the future, while commercial real estate could be a third cheaper.

The tax offices are now putting the objections on the back burner. What even has advantages for individual taxpayers annoys association representatives. Because they need an objection rejection in order to be able to file a model lawsuit.

The Handelsblatt explains whether you have to pay property tax despite an objection, whether the municipalities can still use the data to calculate the new tax rate and under what circumstances an objection makes sense at all.
