Moscow In parallel with the talks on security in Eastern Europe, Russia has started tank maneuvers near Ukraine and Belarus. About 3,000 soldiers are involved in the exercises in the Voronezh, Belgorod and Bryansk regions near Ukraine and in Smolensk near Belarus, the Interfax news agency reported on Tuesday, citing the Russian military.
Previously, the spokesman for the presidential office in Moscow, Dmitri Peskov, was not very optimistic about the course of the first talks on Monday.
The background to the tensions in the region is, among other things, the deployment of almost 100,000 Russian soldiers on the Ukrainian border. The USA and several European countries are warning of an invasion of Ukraine. The government in Moscow denies invasion plans.
