Sometimes saying goodbye to a loved one comes too suddenly. It is not only emotionally that the bereaved have to cope with this. As heirs, they face bureaucratic hurdles.

Frankfurt When someone dies, the family doesn’t just have to deal with the loss emotionally. You also face all kinds of bureaucratic tasks and financial questions. If the deceased has written a will, it must be handed over to the probate court immediately. Anyone who does not act in this way is liable to prosecution. Without a will, the legal succession applies: First it is the turn of spouses or life partners as well as children and grandchildren.

But an inheritance does not always mean new wealth. The estate can also be over-indebted, and heirs must always pay for the debt. In such cases, it may make sense to refuse the inheritance.
