Storming the Capitol: almost three years in jail for rioting Vikings – politics abroad

With black horns, a fur hat and a bare chest, Jacob Chansley (34) became inglorious when he stormed the US Capitol with other rioters. Now the riot Viking has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison.

A federal judge in the US capital Washington sentenced the self-proclaimed “shaman” and supporter of the QAnon conspiracy theory to a 41-month prison term on Wednesday. That equates to three years and five months in prison. The Justice Department had demanded 51 months imprisonment for Chansley’s prominent role in the storming of the Capitol.

Chansley aka Jake Angeli was arrested a few days after the Capitol storm and has been in custody ever since. In September he pleaded guilty to obstruction of an official transaction.

The man from Phoenix, Arizona, stormed the Capitol in Washington on January 6, along with other supporters of the elected President Donald Trump. Pictures of Chansley with a bare torso full of tattoos, a painted face, a fur hat with buffalo horns and a spear with a US flag went around the world.

According to the US judiciary, Chansley was among the first 30 attackers to storm the interior of the House of Parliament on January 6th. He penetrated into the Senate Chamber and even sat at the desk where then Vice President Mike Pence had previously stood in his role as Senate President.

According to the indictment, Chansley called the Vice President a “damned traitor” and wrote on a slip: “It’s only a matter of time. Justice will come! ”Pence made himself unpopular with many Trump supporters because he refused to block certification of the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the presidential election on November 3, 2020. Some Capitol attackers even shouted “Hang Mike Pence”.

“What you did was terrible,” said Judge Royce Lamberth on Wednesday to the address of the defendant. Chansley was remorseful. “Men with honor admit when they have made a mistake,” said the riot Viking. “It was a mistake to break into the Capitol. There is no excuse for it. “

In long explanations, Chansley spoke of mental health problems from which he suffered, referring to Jesus, Mahatma Gandhi and Buddha, among others. He emphasized: “I am not an insurgent. I am certainly not a domestic terrorist. “
