Spotify is reportedly testing a new AI-powered feature that allows users to create playlists from text commands. The discovery was made by a TikTok user named @robdad_, who shared a clip showing the feature in action.
Spotify’s new feature appears under “Your Library” after tapping the plus sign to create a new playlist
The AI playlist feature offers users text suggestions such as “Focus on work with instrumental electronica”, “Fill the silence with background cafe music”, “Get pumped up with fun, rhythmic and positive songs” and “Explore a niche genre like Witch House”. Users can choose a prompt and Spotify’s AI creates a playlist based on the chosen theme.
In his TikTok video, @robdad_ chose the prompt to “Explore a niche genre like Witch House,” and the AI-generated playlist included tracks from artists like Grimes, Pearly Drops, Sidewalks and Skeletons, Mr.Kitty, Crystal Castles, Kito, and GrimesAI.
This feature is currently in testing and has not been approved for public release. Earlier this year, Spotify introduced an AI DJ feature powered by OpenAI technology that delivers personalized recommendations through an AI voice trained by Spotify’s Head of Cultural Partnerships, Xavier “X” Jernigan.
Spotify CEO Daniel Ek expressed the company’s interest in leveraging artificial intelligence to “contextualize and personalize content.” The potential AI playlist feature could be another step in this direction, offering users a more tailored and automated music curation experience.
However, Spotify has not officially confirmed whether the AI playlist feature will be generally available. In response to questions, a Spotify spokesperson said: “We routinely run a range of tests. Some of these tests pave the way for our broader experiences, while others simply serve an important learning function. We don’t have anything else to share at this time.”
