Berlin The Federal Press Ball next Friday will have to do without the opening dance by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. He wanted to refrain from participating “this year”, said the Office of the Federal President of the Federal Press Conference as the host. The ball is traditionally opened by the Federal President and the wife of the chairman of the Federal Press Conference.

The message from Bellevue Palace, which is available to the German Press Agency, states that the Federal President expressly welcomes the great solidarity of German society with Ukraine and is happy to take the opportunity to participate in the fundraiser on the occasion of the ball. The portal “The Pioneer” reported about it first.

The federal press conference as the organizer declared the ball a “Solidarity Ball for Ukraine”. A fundraising campaign via the organization Reporters Without Borders aims to support journalists in Ukraine, as well as reporters in and from Russia who stand in the way of the Kremlin and its war in Ukraine. In addition, journalists and artists from Ukraine were invited to the Federal Press Ball.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will also not take part, as a government spokesman announced on Monday on request. To a certain extent, he stands in the tradition of his predecessor Angela Merkel (CDU), who also regularly stayed away from the federal press ball.
