Sodium sulfur battery technology is revolutionizing!

People have been developing and integrating new technologies into their lives for tens of thousands of years. However, some milestones can accelerate this process many times over. We have experienced the biggest examples with the active introduction of electricity into our lives. However, an efficient method for storing this energy has not been found yet. However, researchers have succeeded in developing a sodium sulfur battery that stores 4 times more energy than Li-Ion batteries at a much more affordable cost.

A new era in technology begins with the sodium sulfur battery!

Clay donuts, thought to date from the 2000s BC, were approximately 13 cm in size, containing iron rods coated with copper and acidic liquids like vinegar. We use these batteries, perhaps the biggest of the secrets behind the ancient period, in every aspect of our lives.

But batteries have always been a formidable obstacle to technology. So much so that instead of internal combustion vehicles, electric cars, motorcycles and even scooters were invented during the first world war. However, since the battery technology of the period was quite backward for these vehicles, the use of oil started.

We are experiencing similar problems today. Almost all people use dozens of technological devices such as smartphones, watches, wristbands, laptops, remotes and tablets. But when we’re away from the outlet for a day or two, all these devices become a pile of junk.

Another example of this is electric cars. Even Turkey, which we can say to be lagging behind in this area as of 2022, is doing huge infrastructure works and installing charging stations. Among the biggest reasons for this requirement are the high cost of batteries and the short range of electric cars.

But this situation may be reversed in a short time. A group of researchers working at the University of Sydney, Australia, developed sodium sulfur battery technology, which can contain 4 times more energy than Li-Ion batteries. In this way, the electric car range, which has reached the level of 1,000 km today, can reach 4,000 km.

Moreover, according to the statement, this high-capacity sodium sulfur battery type is both much cheaper and longer-lasting than the batteries we currently use. In addition, since it is made of molten salt that can be processed from sea water, it is many times less toxic to the environment and people than Li-Ion batteries.

Of course, the project team says that they originally developed these batteries as a storage solution for renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. Because in the next 5 years, with the global clean energy transformation, battery usage will also reach the ceiling. However, as we mentioned, it can be used in many areas.
