Six lessons from the hybrid working experiment

Dusseldorf For almost nine years, Vodafone employees have been deciding for themselves where to spend half of their working hours. As of October 1, the telecommunications group even completely abolished the requirement to be present. Germany boss Hannes Ametsreiter calls it “Full Flex Office” for the around 15,000 employees – to explain directly: “We will not be a 100 percent home office company.”

Half office, half home office: hybrid work models are currently on the rise in most German companies. As early as June, a Handelsblatt survey showed that all Dax companies want to rely on a mixture of presence and on-site work in the future.

What Vodafone is planning goes well beyond conventional hybrid models. The head of Germany even wants every employee to be able to work officially for up to 20 days a year from one location in another EU country. The professional stay abroad must not last longer – for reasons of social security contributions.
