Shipping containers almost as cheap as before Corona – freight rates are falling rapidly

Dusseldorf Freight rates in shipping, which have made many imports massively more expensive since summer 2020, are in free fall. While this is putting large shipping companies under pressure, large parts of industry and trade can apparently breathe a sigh of relief: high prices and strong demand for container freight have put a heavy strain on the supply chains in recent years. According to experts, that should now change.

The journey of a 20-foot steel box (TEU) from Shanghai to Northern Europe, for which USD 8,000 was due at the beginning of 2022, now costs an average of USD 1,479. This makes it hardly more expensive than before the outbreak of the corona pandemic, when it cost around $1,000. Shipments from Shanghai to the US West Coast have recently become even cheaper than in 2019.
