Berlin The CDU triumphs, the SPD and the Greens are in a crucial neck-and-neck race for second place, and the FDP suffers the next electoral defeat: the re-election for the Berlin House of Representatives provides a number of insights.

Not only for Berlin, but also for federal politics. Seven lessons from the Berlin election:

1. Berlin can choose

The first and most banal finding: Berlin can hold elections. After the 2021 election had to be repeated due to numerous glitches, this time the voting took place without any major irregularities.

A matter of course, one would think. However, not after the experiences of 2021. It is not yet clear whether the Berlin election is legally valid. Courts have yet to make a final decision on this.

2. SPD: Neither office nor chancellor bonus

Franziska Giffey has managed the rare feat of turning an official bonus into an official penalty. With her as the top candidate, the SPD had the worst election result in its history in Berlin.
