Dusseldorf When Olaf Scholz returns to Hamburg this Friday, he will not be happy. Here, in his private and political homeland, Scholz joined the SPD at the age of 18, here he studied law and here he was admitted to the bar. Scholz was chairman of the SPD Hamburg for many years, and from 2011 to 2018 he was the first mayor. Now that he is Chancellor, he is supposed to ask questions about Germany’s biggest tax scandal in Hamburg City Hall.

The keyword is cum-ex. The Hamburg business icon Christian Olearius – longtime boss and co-owner of Bank MM Warburg – is accused of being responsible for transactions at the expense of taxpayers. Taxes were refunded that had not been paid at all. Two former high managers of the private bank have already been sentenced to prison terms, and a place in the dock has already been reserved for Olearius.
