Berlin Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke to US President Joe Biden on the phone on Friday. Biden congratulated him on taking office, as the spokesman for the federal government, Steffen Hebestreit, announced in the evening. They have confirmed the close ties between Germany and the USA and the will to further strengthen and deepen them. They agreed that transatlantic friendship was essential for overcoming current and future challenges.

The White House said that in the conversation Biden had emphasized his support for a “robust relationship” with Germany and further strengthening of transatlantic cooperation. They spoke about global challenges such as climate change and the fight against the pandemic, as well as Russia’s troop deployment on the border with Ukraine, the White House said.

The new Chancellor and Biden had already participated on Thursday in a virtual “Summit for Democracy” with representatives from more than 100 governments, which was hosted by the USA.
