Russian separatists want to introduce rubles in Ukrainian provinces

Kherson, Kyiv Ahead of the much-anticipated May 9th – the celebrations of the victory over Hitler’s Germany – Russia is attempting to create facts in Ukraine to make Vladimir Putin’s campaign look like a victory. To this end, the Kremlin has now set up a pro-Russian “civilian-military administration” in the southern Ukrainian region of Cherson, which is occupied by the Russian army.

Cherson is located north of the annexed Crimean Peninsula. Protests against the new leadership by hundreds of outraged residents were crushed by Russian units on Wednesday with tear gas and stun grenades, according to eyewitnesses. On Thursday morning, numerous explosions could be heard there, which, according to Russian sources, are said to have come from Ukrainian rocket attacks.
