Russia ‘pincers’ Ukraine

Berlin Ukraine is going through days of massive fear: On Friday, Russian maneuvers began in the Rostov-on-Don military district, which borders directly on Ukraine. A major maneuver with Belarus had begun the day before and will last until February 20. A third maneuver is currently underway around the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia.

The Russian troops are effectively blocking Ukraine’s access to the Black Sea. The situation now seems so dramatic, with war so imminent, that US President Joe Biden called on his compatriots in Ukraine: “The Americans should go now.”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also warns: “This is probably the most dangerous moment, I would say, in the next few days, in the biggest security crisis Europe has faced in decades.” On Friday, Biden wanted to meet important allies in a short-term advise telephone switch.
