Dusseldorf In view of the energy crisis in Europe, Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck wants to keep two southern German nuclear power plants in reserve until April. The commissioned stress test for the electricity system showed that a crisis was very unlikely for the winter, said the Green politician on Monday in Berlin.

However, they cannot be completely ruled out either. “However, the results of the stress test also mean that we are creating a new nuclear power plant deployment reserve for the winter of 22/23 that is limited in terms of time and content from the two southern nuclear power plants Isar 2 and Neckarwestheim.”

They should still be available until mid-April 2023 in order to be able to make a contribution to the southern German power grid. The Handelsblatt had already reported on such considerations on Thursday. According to Habeck’s account, this means that the two nuclear power plants and the third remaining one in Emsland went off the grid as planned at the end of the year.

The nuclear phase-out, as regulated in the Atomic Energy Act, is therefore maintained. New fuel elements would not be loaded into the reactors and in mid-April 2023 the reserve would also end.

Habeck spoke of a tense situation in the electricity system this year. He referred to the nuclear power plants in France that were shut down for maintenance and the difficult supply of coal piles in south-west Germany because of the low water level in the Rhine.
