The Ukraine war has allowed the Federal Ministry of Economics to develop plans that were unthinkable just a few weeks ago. On Wednesday, Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) called out the first stage of the gas emergency plan out of concern about a supply stop of Russian energy. According to information from the Handelsblatt from government circles, its top officials are still working on significantly more far-reaching steps. Internally, for example, an expropriation and nationalization of the German subsidiaries of the Russian energy companies Gazprom and Rosneft is being played out.

The background to such considerations, in which Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is also involved, are concerns about security of supply in Germany, as several government representatives confirmed to the Handelsblatt. The Federal Government wants to prevent a massive impairment of the energy supply in the event of difficulties for these companies that are systemically important for Germany.

Gazprom Germania operates large gas storage facilities. As a refinery operator, Rosneft Germany is a key player in the petrol, diesel and kerosene markets. Both companies are currently irreplaceable on the German energy market.
