Researchers expect an incidence of 1000s – then it becomes critical

Berlin A few months ago, very few Germans would have thought it possible that a number of new corona infections of more than 200,000 and a seven-day incidence of more than 1000 would not be completely absurd. But it is precisely this development that scientists predict. The reason for this: within six weeks, the omicron variant of the coronavirus almost completely displaced the delta variant.

In the current weekly report, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gives the proportion of Omikron cases for the week from December 20 to 26 at only 20 percent. But: “The proportion of Omikron has always quadrupled per week,” says Corona researcher Kai Nagel, who teaches telematics at the Technical University of Berlin.
