Bonn, Dusseldorf Probably for the last time in this criminal trial, Hanno Berger is busy taking notes and keeps shaking his head. But actually, the former star lawyer accused before the district court in Bonn can hardly be surprised by what Jan Schletz says on this Tuesday morning: “The accused Berger is guilty of tax evasion,” says the public prosecutor calmly shortly before the end of the criminal trial.
If Berger claims that he assumed the legality of the cum-ex business, “that is a protective claim,” says Schletz. He understood the business, as evidenced by numerous e-mails and witness statements.
Then the prosecutor comes to the final demand in his plea: Berger should go to prison for nine years, Schletz explains and attributes Berger to “a high level of criminal energy”.
