Dusseldorf It is the end of a career that has been heavily burdened by the Wirecard scandal: four auditors who were responsible for the former Dax group Wirecard at EY have returned their licenses. The Handelsblatt learned this from circles familiar with the events.
For the quartet, a professional law procedure by the auditor oversight Apas has also come to an end. Three of them signed various Wirecard annual financial statements as the main auditors.
Wirecard slipped into bankruptcy in June 2020 as a result of a multi-billion dollar fraud scandal. Immediately before that, EY had refused the attestation for 2019. Previously, however, the company had unreservedly audited the group’s balance sheets for more than a decade.
Apas proceedings against EY are on the home straight
This led EY examiners to suspect that they had not looked closely enough. Since 2020, Apas has been examining whether and to what extent auditors once violated their obligations in their work for Wirecard and what the consequences are.
