Sony announced that it has successfully resolved the supply chain problems that PlayStation 5 has been struggling with for three years. The global chip shortage that started in 2020 affected various industries, including auto manufacturing and credit cards. While Sony is focusing on hardware with the upcoming launch of the PlayStation 5 Slim, Microsoft is responding with an aggressive discount deal for its Xbox console that includes a three-month subscription service. Both companies have been hit by chip shortages in the gaming industry, with black marketers selling the PS5 at inflated prices in 2022.
Christopher Ding from gaming news site Gamesindustry.biz emphasized the importance of improving supply, especially after players faced difficulties in obtaining the new console. Ding stated that PS5 sales in 2022 will decrease compared to the previous year due to the lack of available units.
Looking ahead, Black Friday deals for PlayStation 5 are expected to be more prominent this year as availability of the console increases. Black Friday, a sales event held annually at the end of November, traditionally offers significant discounts to kick off holiday shopping.
Sony will also introduce new hardware such as the PlayStation Portal, a handheld gaming device, and the Access Controller designed for gamers with disabilities. PlayStation Portal, a hybrid control screen similar to Nintendo Switch, is not positioned as a direct competitor and it is necessary to have a PlayStation 5 to use it.
