Other countries are building new ones: Biblis nuclear power plant soon to be completely gutted | Regional

Biblis / Wiesbaden – While other countries are increasingly relying on nuclear power again to achieve their goals in the fight against climate change, mining in Germany is in full swing. The Biblis nuclear power plant was shut down in 2011, shortly after the Fukushima tsunami. It has been dismantled since 2017.

In order to be able to professionally dismantle the nuclear power plant waste, a so-called “dismantling factory” is being built in Block A: saws, blasting systems and decontamination facilities are supposed to render the materials harmless. According to Environment Minister Priska Hinz (62, Greens), the facility should be in place in mid-2022.

Already dismantled in block A: the main coolant line, also partly the steam generator. The main coolant line no longer exists in Block B.

According to Hinz, the radioactivity of the degradation waste is so low that it can be released after compliance with the Radiation Protection Ordinance and then disposed of in a landfill like regular waste.

Biblis operator RWE wants to complete the gutting of the nuclear power plant by 2032. However, the buildings are not to be demolished for the time being.
